Mung Bean Splitter

Mung bean splitter:  Senegal

Through a funded USAID project at Virginia Tech, Education and Research in Agriculture (ERA), an incentive for a mechanical engineering senior design project grew to develop a mung bean splitter for Senegalese farmers.  Mung beans have been introduced to Senegalese farmers by Virginia Tech as an economical way to fix nitrogen in the soil which enhances productivity of the existing row crops.  Additionally, mung beans are a bonus crop that the farmers can harvest.  Splitting beans is necessary for meal preparation, and this designed system is intended for single person operation to prepare beans for consumption.
