Improved sustainable waste sanitation technology: Rwanda
Much of the world does not have access to adequate sanitation – in the peri-urban African community of Rilima, Rwanda, pit latrines fill up every 12 – 18 months which results in a need to constantly empty and dispose of waste. This is not an efficient system and it can result in contamination that ripples through a community, causing diarrheal diseases that disproportionally affect children. The improved latrine system collects waste in removable buckets which can be easily transported to a disposal site, allowing the latrine to stay in place and operational for many years. The design takes advantage of innovations in desiccating the waste, controlling smell, and integrating the fabrication and maintenance into the local community which in turn builds the local economy.
