Latrine pumper: Malawi
Much of the world does not have access to adequate sanitation – in Malawi, it is estimated that 8,800 people die annually due to diarrheal disease where fecal contamination is a significant cause. Pit latrines are common in the developing world and they can effectively reduce the incidence of disease when used properly, but when a latrine fills up it must be pumped and this is not always easy to accomplish. The VT senior design team tackled the problem of pumping sludge from a latrine and developed a novel design that worked successfully first in the U.S. using pig waste, and then in Malawi during testing in the northern region. Now, the system is being used in Niger.
